Join us for a fascinating exploration of Britain's most northerly islands - Yell & Unst

Far closer to Oslo than London, the islands' strong ties with Norway are immediately visible throughout centuries of Viking history. You'll see beautiful beaches, unspoilt scenery where sheep outnumber people 10 to 1, dramatic castles, and experience intriguing Viking heritage whilst hearing tales from your knowledgeable local guide.

Duration: 10hrs

Please note - tour duration is subject to change in the event of disruption to inter-island ferries. For this reason, we do not recommend this tour as a shore excursion for cruise ship passengers and are unable to guarantee an on-time return.

Leaving Lerwick, we travel to Toft (approx. 45 minutes) to join the inter-island ferry for the short crossing to Ulsta on Yell (approx. 20 minutes)

From Ulsta, we drive to Burravoe to visit the Old Haa Museum, a local museum telling the story of Yell, housed in a historic house with beautiful gardens.

There is a tearoom on site should you wish to purchase refreshments.

Continuing north through Yell, we pause at the Gloup Memorial dedicated to the lives of 58 fishermen lost at sea in a storm on 20th July 1881.

From Gloup we make the short journey to Gutcher to join the inter-island ferry for the short crossing to Belmont, Unst (approx. 10 minutes) from where we journey to Muness Castle on Unst's east coast. Built for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie - a prominent figure during a turbulent time in Shetland, who was accused of oppressing local people - the castle is a stunning example of tower house architecture.

We continue through Unst to the village of Haroldswick where we stop for an included lunch at Victoria's Vintage Tearooms.

The Unst Boat Haven explores the island's relationship with the sea, from the important role the fishing industry has played over the centuries to the leisure pursuits of inshore fishing and sailing races. Highlights include a Viking longship, and traditional Shetland and Scandinavian boats.

Also located in Haroldswick, the Unst Heritage Centre curators will guide you through the role of industry; crofting, knitting, education, religion, and Unst's unique postition in the defence of Britain. The highlight is seeing the replica Viking longhouse.

Retracing our steps by ferry to Yell, we make a stop at the picturesque West Sandwick beach, one of Shetland's most serene and peaceful sandy beaches.

Onwards to the ferry crossing back to mainland Shetland and the scenic coach journey back to Lerwick.
