Duration: 8hrs
One of Shetland's most photographed buildings is the Lodberrie - which was 'home' to DI Jimmy Perez in the first 7 series of 'Shetland' - standing next to Bain's Beach where Perez was often seen drinking whisky with Duncan and offering Cass some fatherly advice. (Please note the Lodberrie is a private residence and cannot be entered. please respect the privacy of the residents.)
We make a stop at the police station and county buildings, the exterior of which appeared regularly in the series' as the Lerwick Police Station.
Next, we visit the Market Cross and Commercial Street; Lerwick's main shopping street, locally known as 'da street' and off which the many 'Lerwick Lanes' lead - these featured regularly throughout the series'.
We'll make a stop at the Bressay Ferry Terminal, Perez travelled on this inter-island ferry to investigate 'criminal events' on the island of Bressay in Series 1. We'll also pass the Northlink Ferry Terminal when the ferry had central involvement in the series 3 storylines.
Heading south from Lerwick, we travel past picturesque Fladdabister, where in series 3 'a body was discovered in an old lime kiln.'
Quite possibly Shetland's most scenic beach, St Ninian's Isle is connected to the mainland by a white sand tombolo. In the series' this was a popular location for parties. Looking up the hill we see the farm buildings and impressive 3-storey farmhouse which featured in series 7 (this is a private residence so not accessible). Moving onwards to pause at Clavel, a ruined croft house which featured in series 3. As we pass Rerwick beach, keep an eye out for the many seals who bask on the sand.
The southernmost point of the Shetland Mainland, Sumburgh Head lighthouse became a fictional hotel in the drama - in reality, the surrounding cliffs are home to one of the largest colonies of seabirds in the islands, with the puffins making this their breeding ground from approx. April to September. In the summer months there is also a visitor centre and small café (admission not included). On a clear day you will be able to see as far as Fair Isle - world famous for its knitting...and as the island where Jimmy Perez was said to have hailed from. Just down the hill the popular Sumburgh Hotel was used during the filming for series 3, posing as a fictional care home.
Heading north again, we visit the historic village of Scalloway, Shetland's ancient capital. We can make a stop here to enjoy some free time for lunch (not included) or shopping - or can continue on our journey.
The beautiful Meal Beach on the island of Burra featured extensively in series' 6 & 7 - then we travel back through Trondra, and drive over the bridge which has been used for many car chase scenes.
We pause for a photostop at the 'Halfway House' (or Sandwater House to give it its proper name). In series 3 it played home to an artist with a stash of dead animals in his freezer! (No entry allowed as a private residence.)
Onwards along Shetland's beautiful east coast, where Gletness in Nesting featured in series 7 as the Noss View Guest House. We also make a stop at the Nesting Village Shop, 'where a shooting took place' in the drama.
The picturesque village of Voe has featured in several seasons of the drams, we'll make a stop at the Sail Loft Böd, 'where student archaeologist Hattie lived'.
The dramatic Northmavine peninsula is at the northern tip of the Shetland mainland. Famous for its rugged scenery and awe-inspiring cliffs, Eshaness has stunning views not to be missed and the area will be recognised from dramatic chase scenes which were filmed near the cliff tops.
Finally, we visit the Ness of Hillswick and pause at Heylor beach before driving along Ronas Voe, which featured extensively in series 7 & 8.
Drop off points can be back at your original meeting point or at a requested location, en route back to Lerwick.
