Following a tour around Lerwick and a view of Clickimin Broch, we travel towards Scalloway, Shetland's ancient capital with its historic castle - built around 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart. There will be a photo stop here offering a full panorama of Scalloway and the castle. Next, we make a visit to Carol's ponies to meet some of the famous and adorable Shetland ponies.
Enjoy the beauty of the Shetland landscape as we travel to the south mainland. We pass through Fladdabister where old crofts and the beautiful wildflowers are points of interest, before a photo stop to observe the island of Mousa - home to one of the best preserved Iron Age brochs in Europe, constructed around 100 BC. Our next stop takes us to the village of Hoswick, where the Visitor Centre provides a welcoming venue for locals and visitors to the area. The café offers delicious homebakes and light lunches - all made to order - there is also a gift shop selling local souvenirs. The Centre displays weaving machinery, local items from times past, and an interpretation of the Hoswick Whale case. Next to the Visitor centre are two knitwear shops, one a very traditional knitwear company, Laurence Odie Knitwear and the other Nielanell, which combines artistic inspiration with inventive knit to create distinct, contemporary designs.
Onwards to Jarlshof, an archaeological settlement dating from the Bronze Age, which has been classed as one of the most remarkable sites ever excavated in the British Isles, then up to Sumburgh Head, where Shetland's first lighthouse was built in 1821, and which is an RSPB reserve where many species of birds breed in the rugged cliffs. Looking down to the sea, you may be lucky enough to see dolphins, minke and humpback whales, grey seals and porpoises.
